Central Monitoring Develops Irrigation Alarm System to Deter Copper Theft

Monday, January 30th, 2012

Mike White, Service Manager with Central Monitoring of Albany, Georgia; talks about their irrigation alarm system they have developed.

I'm Mike White, Service Manager with Central Monitoring of Albany, Georgia, and we've developed a new alarm system to help prevent copper theft on pivot irrigations for farmers. Our system is designed to prevent the theft of the span cable, and to hopefully prevent damage to the pivot unit from anyone trying to steal the span cable.

We monitor a specific resistance inside the cable so we can monitor from the pivot point all the way to the end gun. If anyone tries to disconnect this unit, cut the span cable, or disconnect our unit from the pivot, we can generate an alarm that sends text messages or emails, or we can send it through our central station that is UL listed with 24/7 monitoring.

The reason we came up with this is we had several farmers calling us, practically on a weekly basis, asking us for help. That's what prompted this. We found someone willing to let us play with their pivot unit and we worked on it for about two months. We introduced it in May, and it has taken off since then.
