Ron St. John, Swisher Sweets Farmer of the Year from Florida talks about the process of being picked to be the farmer of the year from Florida, and also shares some information about his dairy farm.
Hi, Ron St. John. I'm Swisher Sweets Farmer of the Year from Florida. It was a tremendous opportunity and a privilege to represent Florida. My business is dairy farming. We have two dairies in Georgia, and we have five dairies in Florida. We have three confinement dairies, freestyle dairies, and we have two grazing dairies. That we were first on the list, as many know, they'd come in on a jet and they'd give us about two and a half hours. Landed, it was raining, they still landed, it's foggy.
We showed them two different styles of dairy, our freestyle dairy and also, our grazing dairy. And the judges are wonderful people, they said they were going to put me at ease, they did. It was a great day, just to have them come and let them interview us. And they interviewed not only myself, my wife and my family. And it was a great experience.
We had a two hour meeting yesterday afternoon, just talking about issues in agriculture, and met all the other people that were running for Southeast Farmer of the Year. I'm glad I wasn't a judge. I was just very happy to be at the table with them. They're truly outstanding agriculturalists. And it was just a real, real pleasure to be here and share with them.
