Monday, February 27th, 2012

Byne Blueberry Farms, supplier to Whole Foods Market and Earthfare, were recently awarded the 2011 Small Business of the Year Award from the Burke County Commission in Georgia.

Dick and Linda Byne of Waynesboro were presented with the 2011 Small Business of the Year award during the recent Burke County meeting in Waynesboro, Georgia.

Since its inception in 1980 as the original Organic Blueberry Farm in the region, Organic Byne Blueberry Farm has grown from a farm of 20 acres to a bonafide food company producing over 14 different products, including blueberry butter, blueberry cider and its latest creation: the dark chocolate-covered blueberry – earning these business owners the distinction of true ‘entrepreneurs.’

In those years, it has gone from what you could describe as a ‘mom and pop’ operation to a full-blown family operated industry with the business owners’ four daughters an integral part of the company today along with employing yearly dozens of part-time workers.

Their diligence has paid off as well, as this total organic farming operation has earned them partnerships with well respected industry leaders like Whole Foods and Earthfare.

From time to time, this business hosts groups from these companies for farm tours, bringing visitors and notoriety to our community. And while they use these instances to promote their products and farming practices, they are always generous in including members of the local agricultural community as well. Dick Byne is a man who cares deeply and passionately about his business, as well as the Waynesboro, Georgia community.

The business owner also was recognized by his peers and the first organic farmer to receive the 2009 Master Farmer Award from Abraham Baldwin College Alumni Association, which selects the award in recognition of alumni who have distinguished themselves as outstanding farmers. The award is based on wise and unique ideas in farm management and operation along with leadership in the home, church, and community.

In 2007, Organic Byne Blueberry Farms won first place in the Flavor of Georgia contest for their Blueberry Salsa and just recently announced, Organic Byne Blueberry Farms has won a spot as a finalist in the 2012 Flavor of Georgia contest! This annual contest is is sponsored by The state of Georgia,

Byne graduated from Abraham Baldwin College in 1973. He went on to complete his bachelor’s degree in Agriculture at the University of Georgia. Byne created Byne Blueberry Farm in 1980 and has been producing berries ever since. Byne, his wife, Linda, and his four daughters, Diane, Janie, Ann Nelle and Marion, all participate in the daily efforts at the farm.

Byne Blueberry Farms has over the years relied on the assistance of international food industry expert Tim Forrest to assist with the company’s marketing effort. http://www.timforrest.com
