Land O'Lakes Introduces New Calf Milk Replacer

Land O'Lakes Animal Milk Products Company announces the release of Cow's Match ColdFront calf milk replacer, a new, uniquely formulated calf milk replacer that helps provide an optimal balance of fat and carbohydrates.
The key ingredients of Cow's Match ColdFront calf milk replacer provide higher and more quickly mobilized energy sources to dairy calves, helping them better overcome challenges associated with cooler weather and environmental conditions.
Colder weather presents the risk of environmental stress to calves. Temperatures below 60 degrees for calves less than 3 weeks-of-age and 42 degrees for calves greater than 21 days-of-age create cold stress effects . Calves begin to require more dietary energy just for maintaining body conditioning.
"Because young calf diets begin with milk replacer consumption, a higher source of utilizable energy in milk replacers is very important," says Dr. Tom Earleywine, director of nutritional services for Land O'Lakes Animal Milk Products.
During times of cold stress, energy is the limiting factor to calf performance. The primary sources of energy in milk replacer are fat and carbohydrates. Cow's Match ColdFront calf milk replacer has been formulated to provide an optimal balance of fat and carbohydrates (lactose) to prepare calves for cold weather conditions.
Based upon the same high nutrition levels of Cow's Match calf milk replacer - which set a new industry standard for full potential milk replacer feeding - Cow's Match ColdFront formula contains L-carnitine. L-carnitine is a non-essential amino acid synthesized in the liver and kidneys from lysine and methionine. Research has shown that an adequate supply of L-carnitine is necessary for the maintenance of good health, helping convert fatty acids into usable energy.
Supplementing the supply of L-carnitine increases the utilization of fats by enhancing the rate of oxidation. By virtue of increasing fatty acid oxidation, L-carnitine increases the ability of calves to better tolerate cold stress. Cow's Match ColdFront calf milk replacer contains 26 percent all-milk protein with amino acid supplementation, and 20 percent fat.
The fat in Cow's Match ColdFront calf milk replacer has an enhanced fatty acid profile that is similar to whole milk and is more efficiently utilized by the calf. The addition of L-carnitine to increase the rate of oxidation of fat enhances the efficient utilization of stored fats.
