Rural Energy for America Program Funds Energy-Saving Improvements
Farmers and rural small businesses seeking to reduce their energy use through building or equipment upgrades can get help with certain project costs through the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP). The U.S. Department of Agriculture runs the program and awarded a total of $83.9 million to 2,376 projects in 2010. In Georgia, more than $3.3 million in grants was awarded to 78 participants last year.

Honey production in Georgia declined slightly in 2010 to 2.53 million lbs. from 2.66 million lbs. in 2009, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The number of honey-producing colonies in Georgia was 55,000 in 2010, down 15 percent from 65,000 in 2009. Part of the reason for the decline is the Varroa mite, a parasitic mite that since 2006 has contributed to the destruction of honey bee colonies across the U.S.

The Georgia Automated Environmental Monitoring Network, operated by the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, is in jeopardy due to key faculty and funding losses. Georgia farmers depend on the network for weather, soil and water information that helps them make the quick decisions needed to efficiently produce their crops.
