Walters Farms Contemplates Expansion
With 800 head of feeder cattle on Walters Farms, owner John Walters and his two sons, Glen and Russ, are contemplating expanding their cattle operation on rented properties in the area. “There are lots of cow/calf farmers around here who are quitting the business. I’d like to add a cow/calf operation on rented property and keep my stocker operation on the main farm,” Walters said.

T.O.P. Farms Sees Growth in Poultry and Cotton
Vann Wooten, owner of T.O.P. Farms, is in the process of building another eight poultry houses on his acreage in Denton, Ga., nearly doubling the size of his poultry operation. With the expansion, Wooten is bringing his son, Derick Wooten, and son-in-law, Brandon Adams, into the business. Currently, the diversified family farm operates 10 broiler houses in addition to 1,500 acres of row crops including cotton, corn, soybeans and wheat, and a 100-head cow/calf operation.

Still Pond Vineyard and Winery Launches Four New Wine Blends
Still Pond Vineyard and Winery introduced four muscadine wine and fruit blends this month under its Farmhouse label. Made entirely at the vineyard, the four blends combine blueberry, peach, blackberry and watermelon with the unique flavor of muscadine grapes. According to Charlie Cowart, director of marketing and winemaker for Still Pond, the idea for the blends came from customers and distributors and early market response has been positive.

ABAC to Offer Natural Resource Management Bachelor’s Degree in Fall 2011
Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC) announced a new Natural Resource Management bachelor’s degree program with majors in Forestry and Wildlife Management that will be available in the 2011 fall semester. The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia approved the degree program at its meeting in Atlanta on Feb. 9, 2011.
