Gary Black Encourages Strong Family Farms
Agriculture is Georgia’s first and largest industry yet farmers are too often taken for granted as the politicians focus on newer industries. Agriculture needs to be front and center in policymakers’ minds every day because it is an industry of the future as well as the foundation on which Georgia was built. The total economic impact of Georgia’s farms and forests tops $65 billion annually. For roughly two-thirds of our counties, agriculture represents the single largest component of the local economy. Since the average farmer produces enough to serve his or her family and 155 other citizens here and abroad, enhancing the strength of our agricultural sector is essential to the well-being of every Georgian.

Jeff Worn says Pecan Exports Threaten Domestic Consumption
Last season, China consumed about one-third of the 315 million pounds of pecans produced in the U.S. and Mexico and drove prices to a record high. If China exports stay at the same level this season, an off-crop year, then shortages may occur in the domestic consumption market, according to Jeff Worn, vice president of South Georgia Pecan Company. “If prices get too high, the industrial buyers may remove pecans from their product mixes and once that happens it will be very tough to get that market back,” Worn said.

Roy Embry sees his Farm Services Expanding
“If we don’t have it, you don’t need it.” That’s how Roy Embry describes his farm service business. The Embry’s are a fourth-generation farming family, originally growing cotton and dairy farming on several hundred acres located in Eatonton, Ga. Today, Embry Farm Service provides feed including hay, silage and molasses, fertilizer, transportation and custom services for farmers. Custom farm services can include spraying, tilling, planting and baling. It also provides sand, gravel, top soil, fill dirt and transportation services to construction companies. In fact, Nichole Mesik, marketing director for Embry Farm Services, likens Embry to a Wal-Mart supercenter with its wide array of services.
