Isolated Showers
Isolated showers provided relief for some in parts of the State, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, Georgia Field Office. Daily average high temperatures were in the lower to upper 90's. Low temperatures were in the low 70's. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 7% very short, 40% short, 50% adequate, and 3% surplus.
Armyworms continued to be present in some fields. Nearly all of the corn is mature, and almost one-half of the corn has been harvested for grain. Virtually all of the soybean crop has bloomed and over three-quarters is setting pods. Some fields of sorghum have been harvested. Practically all of the cotton is setting bolls and over a quarter of the cotton bolls are starting to open. Over one-half of the tobacco crop has been harvested.
Other activities for the week included routine care of livestock and applying fungicides and insecticides to cotton and peanuts. County Extension Agents reported an average of 5.4 days suitable for fieldwork.

Armyworms are number one call our county office has received in the past two weeks. We've had a few dozen reports on hayfields and pastures with cattle and equine clients.Scattered rains are providing much needed relief.Isolated showers this week improved soil moisture in some locations - major activity included harvesting corn silage.

DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL
Our area continues to be hit hard by armyworms. Rainfall really variable, mile by mile and field by field. Some parts of the county received rain on Friday; other parts basically none. Didn't have to spray worms in forages last week but did in millet and will this week; downpours around county, 1-2+ in spots. Soybeans have been dropping leaves since mid June, but it isn't because of maturity it is due to lack of moisture and extreme temps. We are still harvesting watermelons; should be done in 3 weeks.
DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL
We are hot and dry despite days of .05, .25, 1.02, and .38. We are seeing some crop failure. Rains returned to county last week. Soil moisture helped pasture and hayfields recover from armyworm attacks and drought stress.
DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL
Corn harvest in full swing with very good yields since 90% is irrigated. County average could exceed 200 bu/A this year. Got some good rains, still spotty. Should help make peanuts, mature young cotton bolls and fill out bean pods. Loppers are primary soybean insect with stink bug pressure increasing somewhat. White mold showing in peanuts but not severe. Many cotton fields cutting out, even in fields with good moisture as these newer varieties put on a boll load and cease vegetative growth. Scattered showers/hot/fighting worms in pastures Armyworms carved a path in pastures and hayfields as they did all over East Georgia last week.
DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST
We are finally getting rain now that we don't need it for the cotton crop to mature. Peanuts & soybeans are really needing precipitation at this time though.Pastures and Hay Fields continue to be plagued with army worms. More showers spotty around the county last week. Corn harvest just about complete. Insects very bad in pastures that received showers over the past two weeks. Peanut disease on the rise as the crop matures. Rain chances look better for this weekend. Getting some more rain showers. Disease pressure is still high due to weather conditions. Corn harvest is moving along fine. Peanut and Cotton harvest equipment is getting serviced to be ready for digging and picking. Check the maturity of peanuts on Apr 19th planned peanuts and they appear to be 10-14 out from digging. Who is ready for some UGA Football?
DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL
Finally getting some rainfall daily. Peanut soil diseases mostly white mold getting worse. Stripping tobacco. Cotton aborting some squares but looking good with mostly blooms at the top. Bolls opening. Concern for boll rot. Begun harvesting corn but rains have delayed. Spraying hay fields for armyworms. In general crop looks good...
